Anton Paul EISEN (Nuremberg 1777 - after 1819) "Ceres bei dem Etna" (Ceres on the crater of Etna) Rare original etching in the manner punctuated by a subject by Johann August Nahl the younger (1752-1825) printed and published by the same Eisen in Nuremberg. Nice specimen trimmed right at the footprint of the slab, with some slight folds and other minimal defects at the edges but overall in good general condition. According to mythology Ceres went to Sicily where his daughter Proserpina had been kidnapped intent on picking flowers on the slopes of Etna; just from the fire of the crater of the volcano the Goddess lit torches made from pine branches which she used for research. During his stays in Italy Johann August Nahl studied the masters of ancient painting and also Greek and Roman mythology who strongly influenced his artistic production. Bibliography: LeBlanc "Manuel de l'Amateur d'Estampes" Paris 1856 vol.2 pag.195 n ° 1. Nagler "Neues Allgemeines Kunstler Lexicon" Leipzig sd vol.IV page 295. Thieme - Becker "Allgemeines Lexicon der bildenden Kunstler" Leipzig, sd vol.X page 427. Measurements in mm: 470ca x 350ca (the sheet)
